[edit] Description
Originally named the Vigilant, this 128' steamer was launched in 1896. In 1913 she was renamed the Muscallonge. On August 15, 1936 she caught fire, exploded, and sank while approaching Brockville.
The 'Muskie' lies perpendicular to the (swift) current approximately 300 feet from shore. A commemorative plaque from Save Ontario Shipwrecks is midship near some machinery. After exploring the wreck, divers who drift off can see the boiler slightly downstream of the wreck, scrounge for bottles, and surface close to shore by swimming north.
Also known as the Musky or the Muskie.
[edit] Access
The site is accessible by boat, moored to one of two moorings provided by SOS. Charters leave from Saint Lawrence Park.
[edit] Hazards
Be careful of the current and depth at this site. Take note of which mooring line you descend on. Because of the current it may be difficult or impossible to surface swim back to your boat if you ascend on the wrong line.
